Start with your university’s accommodation service, then compare the full contract and cost of each option. Admission does not automatically reserve a room or guarantee priority.
Check what the university actually offers
Ask about eligibility, application deadlines, guarantees, accessible rooms, family accommodation and arrival dates. A guarantee can have conditions such as accepting an offer and applying by a deadline.
Compare university-managed halls, private student buildings, ordinary rentals and homestays. Catering, bills, bathroom arrangements and holiday access vary; none of these options is always cheapest.
Compare the whole contract
Illustrative comparison: £180 per week for 40 weeks costs £7,200. A £160 room for 52 weeks costs £8,320 before any excluded bills. Read the dates and inclusions, not just the weekly price.
Add transport, laundry, bedding and deposits to your cash-flow plan. Check guarantor requirements and cancellation terms, including what happens if your visa is refused or your course changes. Do not assume housing is included in tuition.
Verify the room and payment instructions
Use the university’s official booking links or independently verify the landlord or provider. Ask for the exact address, written terms, an appropriate viewing and a clear record of payment. Pressure to pay immediately without evidence is a reason to pause.
Tenancy and deposit rules differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and by accommodation type. Ask the university housing adviser which rules apply before relying on a general UK checklist.
Plan arrival and keep evidence
Confirm key collection, out-of-hours arrival and any gap before the contract starts. If using temporary accommodation, set a maximum budget and a realistic search period.
Next action: compare three available rooms by total contract cost, commute and cancellation terms. Save the inventory and dated photographs when you move in, and report problems through the provider’s documented process.
