WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Check what your intended MBA programmes accept first. Where both tests are accepted, compare current practice performance and your wider application plans; neither test universally guarantees better admission, funding or employment prospects.

Make the shortlist decide the options

For every programme, record required or optional testing, accepted versions, waiver rules and the last acceptable score date. If a programme states a preference, preserve its exact scope. Do not generalise one school’s policy to all MBAs.

If you are also applying to other graduate degrees, check those departments separately. A convenient test is only useful when the intended recipient accepts it.

Use current sample tasks

The GMAT now contains Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. It does not contain the retired essay or Sentence Correction tasks. Compare its current official practice with the current GRE material supplied by ETS.

An old comparison describing two GRE essays and a GMAT grammar section will misdirect your decision. Take representative tasks before concluding that one test suits you because you prefer maths or vocabulary.

Compare preparation effort fairly

Record accuracy, pacing and the skills needing substantial work. Account for the familiarity advantage if you have already prepared for one test. Two unrelated practice totals on different scales are not directly comparable.

Illustrative decision: if both shortlisted programmes accept both tests, one exam fits your broader applications and you have reliable practice evidence in that format, that may be a practical reason to choose it. It is not proof that the other exam is easier or less respected.

Keep funding and recruitment claims separate

Check each scholarship’s actual selection policy. Do not assume GMAT automatically attracts more money, or that GRE makes an experienced applicant look unfocused. Similarly, a particular employer’s stated screening requirement is different from a universal career rule.

Your next action is to build a two-column comparison covering acceptance, current sample performance, preparation hours, full cost and score deadlines. Choose the option that supports your actual applications and leaves time for the rest of them.
