WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Band 9 represents expert language use. There is no word list, essay template or short course that guarantees it; preparation should expose weaknesses across the assessed skills and address them deliberately.
Check whether band 9 is your actual requirement
An aspirational score can motivate you, but an application needs its specified overall and component results. Separate that requirement from a personal target so preparation does not consume time needed for other application work.
If your current evidence already meets the published condition, check whether retesting offers a concrete benefit before spending more money. Admission and scholarships depend on their own criteria.
Turn descriptors into feedback questions
The official IELTS criteria distinguish aspects such as task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar in writing; speaking also assesses fluency and pronunciation. Read the relevant descriptors with an actual sample of your work.
Ask a tutor to identify evidence for the assessment, not just supply a band estimate. “Your second paragraph does not explain the example” gives you a revision task. “Use more advanced words” is too vague to guide the next attempt.
Practise precision in context
Keep a vocabulary record with meaning, common word partners and a sentence you can explain. Replace a vague claim such as “technology is good” with a specific, supportable statement about what changed and for whom.
Use a cycle of draft, feedback, revision and a fresh task. Repeating the revised answer is useful rehearsal but does not prove that you can apply the skill to an unfamiliar prompt. Include unfamiliar listening and reading material as well.
Measure a sustainable improvement cycle
An illustrative two-week focus could target paragraph development in writing and clear explanations in speaking. Save an initial sample, practise those skills, then compare a fresh sample using the same criteria. Avoid treating a single informal band estimate as a guaranteed test result.
Your next action is to choose the least secure criterion in your current work and request specific feedback on it. Prepare in your booked delivery mode, protect rest and allow time for revision. The goal is reliable language control, not a last-minute performance of impressive phrases.
