WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Yes, an HND holder can have a route to a master’s degree in Nigeria, but the route depends on the university and specific programme. Some professional master’s programmes list HND entry; other routes require further study first. An HND plus any postgraduate diploma is not an automatic admission guarantee.

Start with the exact master’s you want

The question “Can an HND holder go for a master’s in Nigeria?” has more than one answer because universities set programme-specific entry rules. Your HND subject, classification and institution matter, as may work experience and additional qualifications.

First decide what the degree is for. Do you want a professional qualification for your current job, academic research or a later PhD? Those goals may point to different courses. A professional master’s can be useful without necessarily giving the research progression you expect. Ask the intended next institution about that separately.

A verified example of a programme listing HND entry

The University of Ibadan eCampus page for its Professional Master of Information Resources Management lists HND upper credit among its academic entry alternatives. Checked on 14 October 2026, the page describes an online programme with a stated duration of 1.5 years. This is evidence for that named programme, not a rule covering every UI master’s.

The same page also lists other application conditions, including O’Level requirements, NYSC discharge or exemption for Nigerian students, references, a CV and a proficiency-test requirement. Reading only the HND line would miss important parts of the application. Confirm the current intake and how the requirements apply to your record.

If your classification is lower credit, do not quietly treat it as upper credit. Ask whether another published route exists or choose a programme whose requirements match your qualification.

When a postgraduate diploma may be the next step

A PGD can provide additional subject preparation where a university requires it, but eligibility to enter a PGD and eligibility to progress to a master’s are two separate decisions. Get both answers before paying for the first course.

For example, FUTA’s Applied Geophysics department lists PGD eligibility for HND holders with at least lower credit in specified related fields, including petroleum engineering and geology. This is a subject-specific example. It does not establish that every HND subject is accepted or that every graduate of the PGD automatically enters an M.Tech.

Ask which master’s accepts the PGD, the minimum result, any undergraduate qualification condition and whether there is a separate competitive application. A PGD with no confirmed connection to your goal can become an expensive detour.

Compare three routes without assuming one is best

Possible routeWhat you must verifyMain trade-off
Direct entry to a named professional master’sYour HND and classification are explicitly accepted; other conditions metMay suit professional advancement; check later research progression
Relevant PGD followed by a master’s applicationEntry to both stages and required PGD resultExtra cost and time; progression may be conditional
Bachelor’s completion or conversion, then postgraduate studyRecognition, awarded degree and acceptance by the intended master’sLonger route, but may solve a different qualification gap

A worked applicant example

Imagine Ada has an upper-credit HND in a relevant field and works in records management. She is comparing a professional information-management master’s with a research-focused programme. She should not choose solely because one application form accepts her HND.

For the professional course, she checks the exact entry requirements, schedule, assessments and skills taught. For the research route, she asks whether her existing qualification is sufficient and, if not, what further qualification is required. If a PhD is her long-term goal, she also asks the intended PhD department what it would accept.

Now imagine Chidi has a lower-credit HND in an unrelated field. Ada’s answer cannot be copied into Chidi’s application. His subject and classification create different questions. This is why a screenshot saying “HND accepted” needs the programme name and full conditions beside it.

Send an enquiry that can receive a useful answer

A useful message is: “I hold an HND in [subject] from [institution], awarded in [year] with [classification]. I want to apply for [exact master’s and intake]. Does this meet your academic entry requirement? If a PGD is required, which qualification and minimum result would you accept?”

Include relevant experience and any additional qualification. Offer a transcript through the university’s official process. Keep the written response with the programme requirements and check whether it is preliminary guidance or a formal admissions decision.

Avoid paying someone simply to provide a list of universities that supposedly accept all HND holders. An official programme requirement or written assessment is more useful than a long unverified list.

Budget for the complete route

If you need a PGD first, include both stages, application charges, transport, materials and time away from paid work. In a fictional example, a PGD costing ₦700,000 and a later master’s costing ₦1.4 million produce ₦2.1 million in tuition before other expenses. A direct programme at ₦1.6 million has lower illustrative tuition, but may offer a different educational outcome.

Those figures are invented to show the comparison, not current university fees. Ask for a dated schedule and whether instalments, research charges or graduation fees are additional. Never assume that the first payment settles every charge.

Your next step

Choose two or three named programmes. For each, record the accepted qualification, classification, subject, additional conditions, full cost and progression question. Confirm the intake is available before buying application forms.

If your destination is the United States, use our separate US HND guide. A Nigerian university’s admission decision does not establish US degree equivalency.

Frequently asked questions

Can an HND holder apply directly for a master’s in Nigeria?

Some named professional programmes list HND entry, such as the UI eCampus example above for upper-credit holders. That is not a general entitlement; check the complete requirements for the exact programme.

Is a PGD compulsory for every HND holder?

No universal rule should be assumed. Some programmes list direct HND entry; others require additional qualifications or a different route.

Does HND plus PGD automatically equal a bachelor’s degree?

Do not treat the combination as a universal equivalence. The institution assessing your application decides which qualifications satisfy its requirements.

Can I progress from a professional master’s to a PhD?

Check the PhD programme’s rules before choosing the master’s. Its research preparation, dissertation and accepted qualification requirements may differ from those of a professional course.
